Meet the Candidates

President-Elect Candidates

Dr. Mark Bartel (pictured left)
Associate Professor of Music; Director of Choral Music
Friends University
Mark Bartel is in demand as a versatile conductor and music educator. He is the Director of Choral Music at Friends University and Conductor of the Singing Quakers. In July 2010, Dr. Bartel was appointed Artistic Director and Conductor of the Wichita Chamber Chorale — the third artistic director in the choir’s history.
A native of Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, his career has taken him to several cities in the United States and Canada. He has held faculty positions at Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Geneva, N.Y.; the University of Western Ontario, London, Ontario; and Canadian Mennonite University in Winnipeg, Manitoba. As doctoral fellow in choral conducting at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., Dr. Bartel was the conductor of the Repertory Singers and Assistant Conductor of the Eastman Chorale and the Eastman-Rochester Chorus. His doctoral research focused upon 18th century musical-rhetorical theory and the choral music of Bohemian composer, Jan Dismas Zelenka.

Since arriving in Wichita, he has led choirs in several performances at Kansas Music Educators Association and regional American Choral Directors Association conventions. In February 2010, he conducted the 100-voice Wichita Community Children’s Choir in performance at the Southwestern convention of the ACDA in Denver, Colo. He has toured with the Singing Quakers throughout the United States, Germany, and Canada. In addition to the Singing Quakers, Dr. Bartel conducts the Madrigal Choir, Women’s Chorus and Choral Union, and teaches applied voice and conducting at Friends University.

Dr. Bartel is active as a conductor of musical theatre in the Singing Quakers’ annual Broadway show, Symphony of Spring. As an orchestral conductor Dr. Bartel has been artistic director of several youth and community orchestras in Canada. As a conductor of choral-orchestral works, he regularly led the Mennonite Oratorio Choir and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. He conducts Friends University Choirs in choral masterworks and frequently prepares the Singing Quakers for performances with the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and Chorus.
Active in the wider choral community, he is a sought after guest conductor, clinician and adjudicator. Dr. Bartel has held church music positions in both Winnipeg and Dallas, and is the Kansas Choral Directors Association Repertoire and Standards Chair for Community Choirs. He is the founder and director of Choral Connections, an annual festival which brings Kansas high school choirs to Friends University to study and perform under the baton of internationally-renowned specialists in choral music.

Dr. Bartel is a recipient of the Canada Council’s prestigious Sir Ernest Macmillan Prize in Conducting. He holds the Master of Music and Master of Sacred Music degrees from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, and the Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y.

Dr. Michael Hanawalt (pictured right)
Assistant Professor of Choral Music
Wichita State University

Michael Hanawalt is Director of Choral Activities at Wichita State University, where he conducts the Concert Chorale, the Women’s Glee Club, and teaches courses in conducting and choral literature. Dr. Hanawalt also serves as Chorus Director for the Wichita Symphony Orchestra and Director of Music at University Congregational Church in Wichita. Prior to his appointment at Wichita State, Dr. Hanawalt was Visiting Instructor in Music at St. Olaf College, where he conducted the Chapel Choir and the Viking Chorus.

Dr. Hanawalt is a founding member of the professional male vocal ensemble Cantus, based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Throughout his eleven-year tenure with the organization, he recorded twelve CDs, participated in 200 educational outreach events, and performed in or oversaw the booking of over 500 concerts, including collaborations with the King’s Singers, the Boston Pops, the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Minnesota Orchestra. He also served for six years as Cantus’ Executive Director, overseeing its growth through organizational management, fundraising, and board development. Active as a tenor soloist, Dr. Hanawalt is the winner of competitions held by the Schubert Club in Minneapolis, MN, Thursday Musical in St. Paul, MN, and the National Association of Teachers of Singing in Collegeville, MN. Recent past engagements include the Evangelist in J. S. Bach’s Weinachts-Oratorium with the Florida State University Symphony Orchestra and Chamber Choir, as well as tenor soloist in Handel’s Messiah with the Wichita Choral Society and Mozart’s Requiem with Tarleton State University choirs and orchestra. Upcoming engagements include the Evangelist in J. S. Bach’s Matthäus-Passion with the Bethany College choirs and orchestra.

Dr. Hanawalt’s choral arrangements are published by Boosey & Hawkes, Colla Voce, and the Niel. A Kjos Music Company. His setting of “Amazing Grace” was premiered by the Michigan State University Women’s Chamber Ensemble at the National Convention of the American Choral Director’s Association in 2009. His arrangement of “Loch Lomond” is featured on the Cantus recording, Let Your Voice Be Heard, and was recently performed by the Florida All-State Men’s Chorus.

Dr. Hanawalt holds a B.M. in Vocal Performance from St. Olaf College, an M.M. in Choral Conducting from Michigan State University, and a Ph.D. in Choral Music Education from The Florida State University.

Convention Review!

Thanks to all who attended this year's Summer Convention! We hope that you enjoyed the sessions, performances, and the chance to connect with others who share a love of choral music. You can find highlight photos from this weekend on our Facebook page; please share your own (or send them to thompson.tiffani@ymail.com to post).  Also be on the lookout for a reflection survey in the next few weeks.

Congratulations to our new President-Elect, Dr. Cindy Sheppard!  Read her bio on our website here.

As you may have heard, the Kansas All-State Choir is considering a reorganization of some kind.  This could have a great impact on how we audition or select students for our state ensemble(s).  Please take some time to read through the email and information included below form Dr. Dwayne Dunn and take the survey.

Have a great rest of your weekend, and safe travels home from Topeka!

Directors-
You are receiving this survey because you were a Kansas high school director who entered students in district auditions last fall (2014).  With the creation of a new 7th music district for our state (2018) coming soon, changes to the KMEA All-State Choir experience will be necessary.  This may include changes to district auditions, the possible addition of a state-wide audition (similar to what occurs for our All-State instrumental ensembles), and changes to the rehearsal and performance experiences for students at the In-Service Workshop in Wichita.

Change is also being discussed due to the under-representation of choral students versus band students in the All-State ensembles, the inequity of All-State slot allocations between districts, and various other concerns.  Many possible solutions and scenarios have entered the conversation.  The board of KMEA and KCDA has given the go-ahead to collect information from the high school choral directors in the state of Kansas about the upcoming changes that will be needed.

The link below will take you to a survey to help us gather data.  You should be able to access this survey by computer, tablet, or smart phone (however, some of the formatting for the supplemental material may not be correct on smart phone devices – the survey questions themselves will be fine).  Only one survey response per device can be entered (so no sharing devices).  There are 11 pages of background material at the beginning of the survey to bring directors up to speed on the issues and discussion so far.  If you have not been a part of this discussion, please look over the material to familiarize yourself with the many ideas and issues.  If you wish to skip straight to the survey, just click through to page 12 and begin answering the questions.  The survey questions will only require about 10 minutes to complete.

Thank-you in advance for making your voice heard in this process.  Results will be shared with the KMEA Board to help guide their decisions as we move forward with a adding a new music district and trying to make our All-State experience the best possible for the students of Kansas.  If you have additional comments, there is a place to enter those at the end of the survey.  You may also send your comments to Elise Peterson (NEKMEA President-Elect) directly at vocal_1970@yahoo.com.

The Wichita Chamber Chorale is pleased to announce Geoff Wilcken of Lawrence, Kansas as the inaugural winner of the Kansas Choral Composition Prize. The announcement was made on March 27, 2015 preceding the Wichita Chamber Chorale’s spring concert at First United Methodist Church, Wichita. Mr Wilcken attended the concert and was presented a check for $1,000 by Roger Eastwood, Wichita Chamber Chorale President, and Lori Supinie, Owner and President of Senseney Music.
Music scores were submitted anonymously to a panel of judges which consisted of Dr. Dean Roush, Wichita State University; Dr. Leonard Enns, University of Waterloo; Dr. Deanna Joseph, Georgia State University; and Robert Simpson, Houston Chamber Choir. The applicants showed clear and verifiable ties to Kansas by being a native Kansan or a current resident, or by being a student studying at a Kansas institution.
Geoff Wilcken is an active composer, conductor, organist, and pianist, and is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in composition at the University of Kansas. He began his study of composition in 1982 under Drs. Jeffrey Prater and Gary White, both of Iowa State University. He won the Music Teachers National Association composition competition in 1985 and again in 1986. Geoff completed a Bachelor of Music degree at Iowa State University in composition (1995), and subsequently finished his Master of Music degree in choral conducting under Simon Carrington at the University of Kansas (1998).
The winning composition will be performed by the Wichita Chamber Chorale during the 2015-2016 concert season. Dr Mark Bartel is Artistic Director and Conductor of the Chorale. The news release and photo is featured on the Wichita Chamber Chorale website, www.wichitachorale.com. The KCCP winner will be announced in the Chorus America publication Voices, the Kansas Choral Directors Association publication Choral Range, and other various media outlets.
The Wichita Chamber Chorale is a 501(c)3 nonprofit performing arts organization in its 37th season. Roger Eastwood is President of the Wichita Chamber Chorale. Senseney Music, Inc is located in Wichita and is a full- service retail music store. Lori Supinie is Owner & President.
